How to tap dance.

What makes ‘Just TAP’ special?

Unparalleled attention to detail.

I don’t gloss over anything, and have structured and explained the content in a way that makes sense.

Clarity.

I’ve made the course easy. You never have a chance to get lost, and never have a chance to get bored.

Guidance.

I’m with you every step of the way, guiding you from one step to the next and encouraging you along the way. I have a soothing voice (…or so I’ve been told).

Expertise.

I’ve lived and breathed tap for over a decade, and have seen this technique work hundreds of times.

High value. Low Cost.

Even if you are lucky enough to have a dance studio with an adult absolute beginner class in your area, most group classes are at least $15 per class, with private classes anywhere from $75 to $100+ per hour. Sure, you could spend hours on youtube trying to learn for free, but you will likely lose hours searching for sub-par technique.

No fluff.

From the start, I wanted to condense as much value as I could into this course, with zero fluff. I don’t want to waste your time (or mine), so rather than give you 30 videos to suffer through, I’ve given you 3 invaluable videos that cover everything you need to get started with confidence.

Proven results.

It works.

[restab title=”What do I need?”]

REQUIREMENTS:

A LITTLE ROOM TO MOVE AROUND

We do a lot of steps standing still, so even 1m x 1m will do the job. For travelling steps, a corridor or hallway is perfect.

A WOODEN FLOOR IS BEST (But don’t worry if you don’t have one)

A piece of plywood will do the job, or even a plastic office floor protector is a great option that dulls the sound while still being audible to the dancer.

WHAT TO WEAR:

Comfortable clothing that you can move around in.

DO I NEED TAP SHOES?

No. Not to start with. Of course, if you’ve got them, great! But there’s no harm in holding off, and then making the investment once you’ve given it a try. In the meantime, just wear the hardest soled shoes you have.

OTHER HELPFUL ITEMS:

  • Chair (to use as a bar support)
  • Water
  • Mirror (the bigger, the better)
  • Metronome (or Metronome app for smart phone)
  • Notebook

MOST IMPORTANTLY:

A willingness and determination to practice and improve over time. It doesn’t work if you don’t really want to learn. And it definitely doesn’t work if you put unrealistic expectations on yourself.

Welcome! How to tap dance - Bill Simpson

My name is Bill Simpson, I am a professional tap dance teacher and performer, and the creator of the Just TAP series. More about me here.

In early 2015, I set out to create a high-quality instructional video course specifically for adults wishing to learn tap dance for the first time. Many people find their first dance classes overwhelming and intimidating, sometimes eliminating their excitement and motivation to learn, sadly often resulting in them giving up. Over the 13 years I’ve been teaching tap, I’ve noticed that fewer and fewer options are available for adults to learn and understand the crucial fundamentals of this amazing art-form.

I’ve set out to create the course that I wish I had when I was first starting out, and have invested hundreds of hours into creating it for one simple reason: I’ve seen the magic and happiness that tap gives everyone who does it, and I want to give you the best possible start towards discovering this for yourself.

I’m proud of the course, and feel it will be good thing for many people, and for the world of tap dance. Of course, this is not to say it’s perfect, which is the reason that I’m offering ‘life-time updates’; should I discover a better, more efficient way of teaching a step, this will be reflected in the course.

We all know tap is exhilarating to watch, but nothing comes close to actually doing it. Tap universally makes people happy. It has a rich and vibrant history, a dedicated fan base the world over, and the best thing: it’s never too late to start. Tap dance is magic, and I want you to know that whatever your reasons for starting, and wherever the journey takes you from here, I strongly support your decision to learn tap, and I truly hope you stick with it.
